MEET YOUR GUIDE
CAPT. Jacob Vanleer
Hi, I’m Captain Jake Vanleer! I can’t wait to spend the day showing you the wonders of saltwater sight fishing. Originally from Utah, fishing has always been a huge part of my life. In my late teens I picked up a fly rod for the first time, and I was hooked. All my fishing trips became fly fishing trips. Any free time I had was spent chasing fish and the adventures that come from wandering new rivers and lakes.
In my early 20’s I decided that fishing weekends and before work was not enough. I found a job as a fly fishing guide for a dude ranch in Dubois WY. After that first summer I knew I had to figure out how to turn guiding into a sustainable year round career. My second year guiding I returned to Dubois for the summer. I also landed a fall gig in southern Colorado guiding fly fishing pack trips, adding another two months to my guiding season but still had to bare the icy Rocky Mountain winter.
While working in Colorado that fall I learned about a place that is warm when the Rocky Mountains are frozen, and fish that are more than willing to eat a well placed fly. The Texas coast. Thats when I got the crazy Idea, I’m going to save every penny I make guiding this next summer and fall. Drive down to the Texas coast. Spend the winter and spring living out of my car, spend every day fly fishing, exploring and learning the Texas new fishery.
To my surprise I held on to that crazy idea. After a summer and fall of guiding as much as possible and pinching every penny. I loaded up my jeep and made the long drive between the Texas coast and the Rocky Mountains for the first time. I quickly fell in love with the Texas coast. I became addicted to the thrill of hunting saltwater fish. I knew this is where I wanted to be. After four seasons I obtained my captans license and began guiding. Every day I wake up I’m greatful to be able to share my knowledge and passion for fly fishing with others and live my dream.
